Psychological treatments
ONE OF THE FOUNDERS OF MODERN PSYCHIATRY WAS SIGMUND FREUD. HE BEGAN THE TALKING TREATMENT KNOWN AS PSYCHOANALYSIS.
Other pioneers were Jung and Adler. Psychoanalysis proved helpful in treating the neuroses, but when used to treat psychoses in an intrusive manner it sometimes aggravates rather than cures. Carl Rogers later developed a less intrusive talking therapy which is non-directive and less dangerous. In recent years Cognitive Behaviour Therapy has been found to be helpful, also for psychoses, when used in conjunction with medication. Lighter forms of psychological therapy are regular visits to a community psychiatric nurse (CPN), who will discuss day-to-day events and problems and provide psychological support in addition to monitoring the effect of the meds. If you are lucky, you may find a CPN who has the ability to go a little deeper and bring to the surface concerns of which you are only subconscious. A good CPN, moreover, will adopt a recovery-oriented, positive approach.
